Readalong #1: Announcement

As a lover of Japanese authors and Japanese fiction this is something I’ve wanted to start for a while, so here we are.

The basic idea is I post on my blog a book by a Japanese author along with the dates within to read it, giving enough time for you to obtain a copy of the book if it’s something you’d like to join. After the readalong date I will post a spoiler review blog post where we can discuss the book in the comments!

The first book I have chosen is one I have already read and think would be a good introduction for anyone that maybe hasn’t read Japanese authors before. It’s also one I want to re-read and annotate as it’s one of my favourites.

Goodbye Tsugumi by Banana Yoshimoto

(start 1st June – end 15th June)

Banana Yoshimoto is one of my favourite Japanese authors and this one is a nice short contemporary that has stayed with me ever since I read it in summer last year.

Maria is the only daughter of an unmarried woman. She has grown up at the seaside alongside her cousin Tsugumi, a lifelong invalid, charismatic, spoiled and occasionally cruel. Now Maria’s father is finally able to bring Maria and her mother to Tokyo, ushering Maria into a world of university, impending adulthood, and a normal family. When Tsugumi invites Maria to spend a last summer by the sea, a restful idyll becomes a time of dramatic growth as Tsugumi finds love, and Maria learns the true meaning of home and family. She also has to confront both Tsugumi’s inner strength and the real possibility of losing her.

Let me know if this is something you will be joining in with! (also feel free to leave future recommendations for books in the comments.) Here are some links to find out more about the book:

  2. I won’t be joining in this time because I have loads of coursework type stuff to do, but I’ll definitely join in on future ones!
